Keyless Entry System Benefits

Keyless entry offers added convenience, time savings and security to our lives. It has advantages and a few disadvantages but overall, keyless entry is becoming mainstream, not only in our cars, but also in homes and business locations all around the country. There’s something to be said for being able to dispense with keys and those bulky, heavy key rings and chains. Having keyless entry systems allow for a more streamlined locking function with just a few taps of a button.

Added Security

Keys by themselves offer little in the way of extra security. On the other hand, keyless entry systems allow the user to unlock, lock, and in some cases, start their automotive vehicles with the simple push of a button. While keys can be duplicated, and used to steal or vandalize a car, keyless entry operates from signals that are sent to the car and are not easily duplicated.

Added Convenience

If your hands are full and you are approaching your car, the last thing you want to do is put everything down so that you can hunt around in your pockets, find your keys, unlock your trunk and then load everything into it. It’s much easier and more convenient to simply press the button on your keyless entry remote and have the auto trunk instantly unlocked and open for you to load your items into it.

Helps stop thieves

If a would-be car thief tries to enter your key code and gets it wrong, he only has a couple more tries before he is automatically locked out and unable to try again for a set time. On many systems, the police are even called and/or an alarm goes off! It’s much like entering the wrong password when trying to log into your bank account. After too many tries you are locked out for a time and might even have to go into the bank in person in order to get it unlocked.

Keyless entry at home

Yes, it is now possible to enjoy keyless entry at home. Actually, it has been around for a while but it is not as commonly used for residential purposes as it is for cars. At this point, keyless entry is used more in condo and high rise residential uses but you increasingly find it in hotels, motels, time shares and other resort and vacation uses like cruise lines and even bed and breakfast operations.

You have the same advantages with home keyless entry as you do with their automotive counterparts; no keys to lug around and keep track of! You are free to walk the dog, go shopping, leave for a morning jog or just go out to lunch without ever having to find a place for your keys and keep track of them at the same time. Having keyless entry at home also cuts down on the incidents of crime as you never have to worry about someone making a key copy or finding one of your door keys and getting inside. You also never have to hide a spare under the door mat (bad idea, anyway!) or hunt around for a spare. There are simply no lost keys for one good reason; the “key” is in your head! As long as you don’t forget your code or give it out; you are fine!

Keyless entry for commercial use

There are thousands of companies in the Georgetown, TX metro area that use keyless entry on a daily basis; even more on the national level. The “key” component has now been replaced by key codes, thumbprints, badges, swipe cards, combination dials and even retina scans. By dispensing with keys, the local business can now eliminate the need for key cutting, key breakage, lost keys, stolen keys and all the problems that accompany these issues. With the sophisticated key pads being used today, the business management can keep better track of when the codes were used, how often and by whom. You can find commercial keyless entry used in banks, credit unions, investment firms, savings and loans, call centers, hospitals, medical facilities, schools, retail outlets, and many other similar places.

If an employee is terminated or forgets his or her code, the old one can be changed or revoked. When combined with video surveillance cameras, this combination proves to be quite effective in granting access and keeping track of crowd flow and employee access and activity.

Disadvantages of keyless entry systems

Not all aspects of keyless entry are positive. We have already briefly mentioned one common problem; forgetting your key code. Much like losing your keys, a forgotten key code can pose an issue as too many attempts to enter the code will result in a lock out for a designated time and might even incur a call to police. Also, it’s a common way to combat forgotten things is to write them down and when dealing with key codes and combinations, you never want to do that.

Keyless cars are also much easier to leave running. A moment of distraction can lead to a still running car and when combined with an enclosed garage, this can lead to disastrous results. There are known cases of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning when a keyless luxury car was later found still running in the garage. Key users are conditioned to turn the vehicle off by turning and removing the key. With keyless entry this is not necessary so it’s easy to simply leave it running without meaning to.

Another potential problem is a power failure. Unless your system has a battery back-up, your lock can remain in the locked or unlocked position if electrical power is lost. This makes it difficult to leave your home if you can’t properly secure your door just like it makes it hard to even enter your home if your key code won’t work due to not having electrical power.
